Max Verstappen delivered a masterclass in qualifying to secure pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, marking his fourth consecutive pole at this iconic circuit. The Dutchman set a blistering lap time of 1:26.983, a new track record, narrowly surpassing McLaren’s Lando Norris by just 0.012 seconds.
McLaren’s strong performance was further underlined by Oscar Piastri, who secured third place, a mere 0.044 seconds behind Verstappen. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc claimed fourth, trailing by 0.316 seconds.
The third row will feature the Mercedes duo of George Russell and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, while Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar impressed by qualifying seventh. Lewis Hamilton, in his Ferrari, will start eighth, followed by Williams’ Alexander Albon and Haas’ Oliver Bearman rounding out the top ten.
Notably, Williams’ Carlos Sainz qualified 12th but received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Hamilton during Q2, relegating him to 15th on the grid.
The qualifying session was not without incident, as sparks from the cars ignited dry grass around the circuit, leading to multiple red flags and interruptions.
With such a tightly contested grid, the stage is set for an exhilarating Japanese Grand Prix, as Verstappen aims to convert his pole position into a victory amidst fierce competition from McLaren and Ferrari.
