Arsenal pulled off a historic upset, defeating reigning champions Barcelona 1-0 to claim their second UEFA Women’s Champions League title—18 years after their first.
Swedish striker Stina Blackstenius was the hero for the Gunners, scoring the decisive goal in the 75th minute at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon. Latching onto a clever reverse pass from fellow substitute Beth Mead, Blackstenius fired a low diagonal shot beyond Barca goalkeeper Catalina Coll, sparking wild celebrations among the 5,000 travelling Arsenal fans.
The victory marks Arsenal’s first European title since their 2007 triumph and comes against a Barcelona side that was heavily favored to win a third consecutive crown and their fourth in five seasons. The Catalan giants had reached six of the last seven finals and were widely considered the best team in the world.

But on a night of resilience and tactical discipline, Renee Slegers’ side defied the odds. “We had to suffer a lot,” said forward Alessia Russo through tears. “There would be moments when we wouldn’t have the ball, and we’d have to be okay with that. But we knew our moment would come.”
Barcelona dominated large spells of the game, recording 20 shots to Arsenal’s eight and winning 12 corners to just two from the Gunners. Ona Batlle came close with two long-range efforts, and the Spanish champions thought they had fallen behind earlier in the match when Irene Paredes deflected a cross into her own net—only for VAR to rule Frida Maanum offside in the buildup.
Despite the pressure, Arsenal’s backline, led superbly by Leah Williamson, held firm. The England international, who was a mascot at Arsenal’s 2007 final win, played a pivotal role in keeping Barcelona at bay. “Some people had the game of their lives,” she said. “I’m so happy. I’m trying not to swear or cry.”

Barcelona midfielder and reigning Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati was left devastated by the loss. “I don’t believe it,” she told Catalan TV. “I just want to start the game again and do it differently. Personally, this hurts me a lot.”
The defeat marks just Barcelona’s fourth loss across all competitions this season. But it was Arsenal’s night—a story of grit, belief, and seizing the moment. As “We Are the Champions” rang around the stadium post-match, the Gunners celebrated with their fans in red, a club united in triumph once more on Europe’s biggest stage.
