A MAFA Second Division match between Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s AFC and Żebbuġ Youngsters descended into chaos on Saturday, after a violent altercation between two players led to a broader pitch invasion and scuffle.
The match was suspended in the 53rd minute following the initial clash, which saw both players receive straight red cards. However, the situation rapidly escalated as other players and members of both coaching staffs became involved in the fracas, with video footage showing several individuals entering the field and contributing to the disorder.

To make matters worse, supporters in the stands were caught on camera shouting inflammatory comments, including “tihielu” (“let him have it”) and other abusive language, adding to the heated and hostile environment.

Both clubs and the players involved now face disciplinary action from the Malta Amateur Football Association (MAFA) as well as the Malta Football Association (MFA), with a hearing scheduled for Wednesday to determine the outcome of the match and issue any sanctions.
For many football fans, the incident was both disappointing and alarming. Moments like these tarnish the spirit of the game, where passion should never cross into violence. The hope among supporters is that clear and firm decisions are taken to uphold discipline and to ensure that football remains a sport rooted in respect, sportsmanship, and unity.
