Victoria Hotspurs continue their 100% record in Amateur League 2

Victoria Hotspurs were looking for none less than three points against second-placed Mqabba to continue their 100% record. Mqabba were hoping to contain the Hotspurs and maintain second place. Victoria Hotspurs took the lead on 20 minutes with a fine effort by Daley Rondinely that gave Mario Bartolo no chance.

Victoria could have made it 2-0 on 30 minutes with a stinger by Kurt Borg was brilliantly saved by Bartolo for a corner. From the same corner, it was 2-0 with a simple tap in for Rondinely after Borg’s shot had been superbly saved by Bartolo again.

Victoria continued dominating proceedings and Kurt Borg was again denied a goal by another superb Bartolo save. The fourth goal came on 53 minutes courtesy of Emmanuel Mbong as the match turned into a mere statistic. Mqabba scored a consolation goal three minutes from time courtesy of Ryan Dalli.

St Georges 2 Dingli Swallows 0

St Georges were hoping to grab some points from this top-drawer encounter against Dingli Swallows who were themselves looking to regroup after their recent stumbles. Dingli had a glorious chance after 16 minutes when a free kick by Daley Ronaldinho found Andie Sammut whose header cannoned off the post with Clive Caruana saving for a corner.

However, it was the Pioneers who took the lead on 17 minutes when a brilliant free kick by Robert Matthew Gauci gave Adam Benjelloun no chance. Dingli reacted strongly and should have equalized on 22 minutes when Daley Ronaldinho was in the clear, but his effort was brilliantly blocked by Caruana. The rest of the half was a calmer affair with both teams having opportunities.

St Georges went close to a second on 51 minutes, but Victor Olowoyo’s effort was somehow saved for a corner. On 69 minutes, the Saints doubled when a short corner found Matthew Gauci who smashed a brilliant shot past Benjelloun.

St George’s sealed the issue on 79 minutes when they awarded a penalty after a handball in the box. Gauci clinched his hat trick with a fine effort that sent St George’s into temporary third place.

Santa Venera Lightnings 1 Siggiewi 1

Siggiewi were looking at gaining the three points against bottom side Santa Venera who were still without a point this season.

Siggiewi came close on 10 minutes when Ansanyi Isaac saw his point-blank effort brilliantly saved by Ryan Micallef. Santa Venera Lightnings also had a chance to take the lead when Neil Farrugia’s effort was saved for a corner by Seisun.

Santa Venera started the second half with another good chance when a stinger by Donovan Zammit was brilliantly saved by Seisun. But it was Siggiewi who took the lead on 53 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Ansanyi Isaac rounded Micallef who tripped the Ghanian forward with the referee pointing to the spot. Lincoln Micallef stepped up and easily converted the spot kick.

Siggiewi had another fine chance on 72 minutes when Ansanyi headed towards the corner with Micallef saving acrobatically. But Santa Venera managed to equalize on 74 minutes when substitute Miguel Grima concluded with ease much to the delight of the Lightnings contingent.
