Manchester United’s struggles continued as Nottingham Forest completed a Premier League double over Ruben Amorim’s side with a 1-0 victory at the City Ground. The United manager lamented his team’s lack of attacking quality, admitting they “need to get it right fast” after another disappointing result.
Elanga Haunts Former Club with Decisive Goal
The match was decided by a stunning counterattack from Anthony Elanga, who spent nine years at United before joining Forest. In just the fifth minute, the Swedish forward sprinted nearly 85 meters after a clearance from Ryan Yates, before slotting past United goalkeeper André Onana.
Forest’s win boosts their Champions League qualification hopes, while United remain in 13th place, still without consecutive league victories this season.
United Struggle in Front of Goal
United had their moments, with Diogo Dalot hitting the crossbar in the first half. However, their best chances came late on, with Harry Maguire—substituted on in the 88th minute as an emergency striker—coming closest to an equalizer. The center-back saw a header go wide and then had a goal-bound effort cleared off the line by Murillo deep into stoppage time.
Amorim acknowledged United’s lack of sharpness in attack, particularly with Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee, who both struggled to make an impact despite their combined £100m price tag.
Amorim Defends Maguire’s Late Attacking Role
The United manager defended his decision to push Maguire forward, explaining:
“When the opponent is protecting the box with a line of six, we need a presence inside the area. Harry Maguire is one of our best players in the air. In that situation, you are not a defender but a striker. That was the idea—to put someone who is really good at scoring from crosses.”
When asked if it was worrying that a center-back created the best chances, Amorim responded:
“Nottingham were playing deep with a low block, so it became a matter of size and heading ability. Even with the best strikers in the world, sometimes defenders are the best options to attack in the box. Harry is really good at that.”
No Time for Development – Results Needed Now
Elanga’s performance raised questions about United’s inability to develop young talents like him, but Amorim was clear that he does not have the luxury of time.
“Sometimes young players need time to develop. I won’t have that time. We have to get it right, fast.”
With United’s form faltering, the pressure is mounting on Amorim to find solutions quickly as the club risks falling further behind in the race for European football.
