Union Berlin missed out on their first-ever win against Bayern Munich as the Bundesliga leaders fought back to draw 2-2, ending Bayern’s 16-game winning streak.
Bayern started slowly in Berlin, possibly tired after their tough Champions League win in Paris on Tuesday. Union Berlin almost scored early on when Ilyas Ansah’s header was ruled offside. However, Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made a mistake just before the half-hour mark, letting Danilho Doekhi’s shot from Janik Haberer’s corner slip through his hands and into the net.
Bayern responded before half-time thanks to Luis Díaz. The former Liverpool player chased down a ball that was about to go out for a goal kick, beat Haberer, and fired a shot past Frederik Rønnow from a tight angle. Bayern looked to take the lead, but Díaz’s strike went wide and Harry Kane’s goal was disallowed for offside.
After the break, Union Berlin kept pressing. Michael Olise forced Rønnow into a low save to keep Bayern level. Union took the lead again late in the game when Doekhi capitalised on Kane’s weak header from a free-kick and scored with his left foot.
Bayern had the final say as Kane redeemed himself, heading in Tom Bischof’s cross to score his 13th league goal of the season and secure a point. Bayern may have dropped points, but they still lead the league by six points, while Union Berlin finish the day in 10th place.
