But their title dreams came crashing down in shocking fashion during the playoffs.
The New York Knicks eliminated Boston in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, delivering a 38-point blowout that stunned fans and analysts alike. As if the loss wasn’t devastating enough, star forward Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles tendon during the game. The injury will sideline him for 9 to 12 months, effectively ruling him out for the entire 2025-26 season.
With Tatum out, Jaylen Brown becomes the focal point of the franchise. Fresh off knee surgery, Brown is expected to be ready for training camp, but the pressure on him to carry the Celtics without his All-NBA counterpart is enormous.
The team’s dominant run — including over 60 wins per season for the past two years and an 11-year playoff streak — now hangs in the balance.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Celtics front office is exploring significant changes. While Tatum remains untouchable, nearly everyone else on the roster could be in play — including Jaylen Brown and Derrick White — if a blockbuster trade offer comes their way.
“Are teams calling with serious offers about Brown and Derrick White? You bet they are,” Charania reported. “The Celtics don’t want to move them, but if something huge lands on the table, they’ve got to think it over.”
Two key veterans potentially on the chopping block are Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porziņģis:
- Holiday, who turns 35 next week, is set to earn $32.4 million next season. While still a strong contributor, his age and salary make him a candidate for a move.
- Porziņģis, earning $30.7 million, has struggled with injuries throughout his career and could be traded to free up cap space or bring in younger assets.
Since their Finals loss to the Warriors in 2021, the Celtics have amassed more wins than any other team in the league. They’ve been a model of consistency and success — reminiscent of the Larry Bird-era Celtics from the late ’70s to early ’90s.
But now, with their franchise cornerstone injured and trade rumors swirling, Boston faces one of its most uncertain offseasons in years. For a team built to win now, the path forward could involve retooling — or even rebuilding.
