Portuguese Grand Prix returns to F1 calendar for 2027 and 2028

The Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimão has been confirmed to return to the Formula 1 calendar for the 2027 and 2028 seasons under a two-year agreement, organisers announced on Tuesday.

The Algarve International Circuit previously hosted the race in 2020 and 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, with both editions won by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Portugal also has a longer history in Formula 1, having hosted the Grand Prix at Estoril between 1984 and 1996, and earlier races in the country took place from 1958 to 1960.

The Portimão event is expected to replace the Dutch Grand Prix, which is scheduled to be removed from the calendar after 2026. The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix will take place in late August. Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali praised the circuit, saying, “The circuit delivers on-track excitement from the first corner to the chequered flag, and its energy lifts fans out of their seats.”

The 2026 Formula 1 World Championship will begin in Melbourne on 8 March, with Lando Norris set to defend his drivers’ title following his victory in Abu Dhabi earlier this month.
