Lando Norris triumphs in rain-soaked 2025 Australian Grand Prix

In a race heavily influenced by rain and multiple Safety Car interventions, Lando Norris secured his maiden victory of the 2025 Formula 1 season at Melbourne Park, Australia. The drama unfolded even before the lights went out, as Isack Hadjar crashed during the Formation Lap, forcing him to retire before the race had even begun. This incident delayed the start by 15 minutes, and when the race finally got underway, it was Jack Doohan who was the next casualty, retiring on the opening lap following a crash.

Further chaos ensued on Lap 2 when Williams driver Carlos Sainz suffered a solo incident under Safety Car conditions, bringing his race to an early end.

McLaren looked particularly strong throughout the race, with Norris consistently leading, closely followed by Australian driver Oscar Piastri, who was determined to secure a home victory. However, on Lap 34, Fernando Alonso crashed his Aston Martin, prompting multiple drivers to pit for wet tyres as the rain intensified.

Disaster struck McLaren on Lap 45 when both Norris and Piastri lost control of their cars. While Norris managed to recover quickly, Piastri suffered the worst of it, dropping several positions and struggling to rejoin the track after sliding into the grass.

On Lap 48, the Safety Car was deployed once again following separate incidents involving Gabriel Bartoleto and Liam Lawson. This allowed Norris to regain the lead from Max Verstappen, setting up a thrilling finale.

The final laps were a tense battle between Norris and Verstappen, who are already emerging as key title contenders for the 2025 season. In the end, the British driver held off the reigning champion, crossing the finish line with less than a second to spare. George Russell secured third place for Mercedes, while Kimi Antonelli initially finished fourth but was demoted due to a five-second penalty late in the race.
