Canadian Formula One driver Lance Stroll will not participate in Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix due to persistent hand and wrist pain, his Aston Martin team announced on Saturday.
The 25-year-old, son of team owner Lawrence Stroll, has been struggling with discomfort for the past six weeks, which medical experts believe is related to complications from surgery following a cycling accident in 2023. Despite qualifying 14th at the Circuit de Catalunya, Stroll was deemed unfit to race after a consultation with his medical team.
“His medical team have confirmed that he will not race tomorrow and he will undergo a procedure to rectify these issues before focusing on his recovery,” Aston Martin stated in an official release.
Stroll’s absence comes as a blow to the team, which will not be able to replace him for the race due to Formula One regulations. This means Aston Martin will field only one car on Sunday.

Earlier on Saturday, Stroll was also summoned by race stewards after qualifying for failing to be weighed during the session — a minor procedural issue that now becomes irrelevant in light of his withdrawal.

Stroll’s health and long-term recovery now take priority, and the team expects him to return once he has undergone treatment and is medically cleared to race again.
