Hamilton handed three-place grid penalty for impeding Verstappen in Monaco Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix from seventh position after receiving a three-place grid penalty for impeding Max Verstappen during qualifying.

The seven-time world champion, who had originally qualified fourth for Ferrari, was summoned by race stewards following the incident involving Red Bull’s Verstappen. After reviewing the situation, officials determined that Hamilton had inadvertently blocked the Dutch driver due to a communication error from the Ferrari pit wall.

According to the stewards’ report, Ferrari informed Hamilton that Verstappen was on a fast lap, and then moments later, incorrectly told him that the Red Bull driver was slowing down. Acting on that misinformation, Hamilton remained on the racing line, causing Verstappen to be impeded.

Hamilton reportedly expressed immediate frustration over the misleading team message during the session. However, the stewards ruled that despite the team’s error, the driver must still bear the consequences.

“During the hearing, the fact of the team’s incorrect message leading to the incident was accepted by the driver of Car 44 (Hamilton),” the report noted. “The fact that the radio message was the cause of the impeding does not amount to a mitigating factor.”

As a result, the standard penalty of a three-place grid drop was applied, moving Hamilton down the order to seventh on the grid for one of Formula 1’s most prestigious and unforgiving races.

The setback comes despite Hamilton’s strong showing in qualifying and marks another moment of frustration in what has been a season of transition with Ferrari. With overtaking notoriously difficult around the streets of Monte Carlo, the penalty could significantly impact his chances of challenging for the podium on Sunday.
