Ħamrun Spartans have announced the appointment of Italian coach Giacomo Modica as their new head coach, as the Maltese champions gear up for the UEFA Champions League qualifiers and the upcoming domestic season.
Modica, born on 31 May 1964, is a seasoned manager and former midfielder, widely known for his close collaboration with legendary Czech coach Zdeněk Zeman during his earlier coaching career. Most recently, Modica was in charge of Italian side Messina, where he served until the conclusion of the 2023–24 season.
With his trademark attacking philosophy influenced by Zeman, Modica is expected to bring an entertaining and disciplined style of play to Ħamrun Spartans, who are looking to build on their recent domestic successes and make an impact on the European stage.
“I am excited to begin this new chapter with Ħamrun Spartans,” Modica said during his unveiling. “It’s a proud club with great ambition, and I look forward to working hard to achieve important results together, both in Europe and in the Maltese league.”

Ħamrun will soon begin preparations for their UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign, aiming to reach the group stages for the first time in the club’s history. Modica’s appointment signals the club’s serious intent to continue growing and competing at higher levels.

Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as Modica brings his experience and tactical identity to Maltese football, hoping to lead Ħamrun to even greater heights.
