Monaco extended their unbeaten home run to ten matches with a 2-2 draw against Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League, as Eric Dier converted a late penalty to snatch a point.
City struck first on 14 minutes. Joško Gvardiol threaded a pass that sat up awkwardly, but Erling Haaland adjusted smartly and lifted the ball over Philipp Köhn to score for an eighth straight game for club and country. Monaco answered within three minutes when Jordan Teze unleashed a swerving drive from distance that flew beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma into the top corner.
City controlled much of the first half thereafter. Phil Foden rattled the bar and Haaland went close from a tight angle, before the Norwegian rose to meet Nico O’Reilly’s hanging cross and guided a firm header past Köhn on the stroke of half time.
Monaco emerged sharper after the interval. Maghnes Akliouche cut in from the right and forced an outstanding save from Donnarumma, while City responded by slowing the tempo and keeping the ball. Tijjani Reijnders then struck the crossbar from range as the visitors searched for a clincher.
The decisive moment came late on. Nico González caught Dier in the face inside the area and, after a VAR review amid heated protests, a penalty was awarded. Dier stepped up and finished calmly to earn Monaco their first point of the group phase and extend City’s run without a Champions League away win to five matches.
