Atalanta’s poor start to the Serie A season continued with a 3-0 home defeat to Sassuolo, their seventh league match in a row without a win.
The hosts began brightly and almost took the lead after eight minutes, but Lookman’s effort was blocked on the line by Idzes. Sassuolo grew into the game and were given a penalty before the half-hour mark when Pinamonti was fouled by Carnesecchi. Berardi converted calmly into the bottom corner for his third goal of the season. Atalanta struggled to create chances, managing only one shot on target in the first half.
Just two minutes after the restart, things got worse for Atalanta. Berardi found Pinamonti in the box, and the striker turned and finished neatly to make it 2-0. Atalanta had a brief spell of pressure when Krstović shot wide, but Sassuolo nearly wrapped up the game soon after when Thorstvedt missed from close range.
The home fans voiced their frustration as Berardi was played through by Thorstvedt midway through the second half, and he calmly finished to complete the scoring and seal a big win for Sassuolo at the New Balance Arena.
Last season’s Serie B champions now move up to eighth in the table, while Atalanta drop to 13th after collecting only two wins from their first 11 league games.
