Fiorentina are still without a win in Serie A this season after a 2-2 draw with fellow strugglers Genoa at Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Genoa, hoping for back-to-back top-flight wins for the first time since January 2024, took the lead after 15 minutes. Aarón Martín’s free-kick caused confusion in Fiorentina’s defence, and Leo Østigård headed the ball into the bottom corner.
Genoa’s joy was short-lived, as Lorenzo Colombo handled the ball in the box three minutes later. Albert Guðmundsson calmly converted the penalty, choosing not to celebrate in front of his former club.
After a tense start, the match became fast-paced and end-to-end. Fiorentina dominated late in the first half but couldn’t score, leaving the teams level at halftime. Early in the second half, Genoa had another penalty after a VAR handball decision against Luca Ranieri. Colombo stepped up to make amends for his earlier mistake, but his penalty was saved by David de Gea.
Moments later, Fiorentina took the lead when Alessandro Marcandalli mishandled a clearance, allowing Simon Sohm to set up Roberto Piccoli, who finished calmly. However, Genoa quickly equalised as Colombo redeemed himself. De Gea was out of position after failing to claim a cross, and Colombo tapped the ball into the empty net.
Piccoli came close to a late winner for Fiorentina, but Nicola Leali made a brilliant save to secure a point for Genoa.
The draw does little for either team. Fiorentina remain bottom of the table, and Genoa are 18th. However, avoiding defeat to a direct relegation rival keeps both sides just one win away from climbing out of the bottom three.
