French centre-back Raphael Varane has officially joined Como on a two-year contract, with the option to extend, according to an announcement made by the newly-promoted Serie A club on Sunday. After a successful stint at Manchester United, where he spent the past three years following a highly decorated career at Real Madrid, the 31-year-old World Cup champion arrives as a free agent.

“Raphael is an exceptional player, and his signing demonstrates the ambition we have for this club,” remarked Cesc Fabregas, the new manager of Como. Varane’s arrival adds to the growing list of Premier League players who are making the move to Italy ahead of the upcoming season, joining the likes of former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina and defender Alberto Moreno.
