Barcelona Affirms Support for European Super League Following ECJ Ruling

Barcelona has expressed its “satisfaction” with the European Court of Justice’s (ECJ) decision that FIFA and UEFA acted unlawfully in attempting to block clubs from joining the European Super League (ESL).

Barcelona, alongside Real Madrid, remains committed to the ESL project, which faced widespread backlash and withdrawals from other major clubs.

The La Liga champions welcomed the ECJ’s ruling, considering it a historic moment that opposes the perceived monopoly of FIFA and UEFA over the football world. In a statement, Barcelona emphasized its role as one of the clubs driving the Super League project, believing that the verdict opens the door for a new elite-level football competition in Europe.

Barcelona sees the Super League as a solution to address issues such as fixture overload and the excessive number of games between national teams. The club advocates for a system that regulates financial fair play among participating teams, prioritizes the well-being of players and supporters, and emphasizes meritocracy based on on-field results.

Despite criticism from fans, Barcelona claims that supporters will be at the “center” of the ESL project. The club envisions the ESL as a means to offer constructive solutions for current issues in elite sports. Barcelona declared its support for the Super League promoted by A22 Sports and encouraged a constructive debate among domestic and international football bodies.

The statement concludes by expressing Barcelona’s commitment to leveraging its experience and knowledge to propose solutions for current challenges in elite sports. The club sees itself as a pioneer in the world of sport, striving for professionalized structures and sustainability in various sports, both domestically and internationally.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, another staunch supporter of the Super League, also hailed the ECJ’s ruling as a “great day for the history of football.”
