Serbia eye crucial win over Andorra to ignite WCQ campaign

Serbia’s World Cup 2026 qualification journey began on a frustrating note with a 0-0 draw away to Albania, a result far from what Dragan Stojković’s men would have envisioned. With England the overwhelming favourites to top Group K, Serbia must now focus on securing second place—and the potential play-off spot that comes with it—as they chase a third consecutive World Cup finals appearance.

Despite a squad brimming with talent, Serbia’s recent form has left much to be desired. They’ve managed just two wins from their last 12 international fixtures (D7, L3), with four of those draws coming in their last five matches. While such inconsistency might raise concerns, the upcoming clash against Andorra offers an ideal opportunity to turn the tide. Not only is Andorra one of the weakest teams in the group on paper, but Serbia also boast a remarkable home record, remaining unbeaten on their own turf since 2010 (W7, D4).

Andorra, ranked 173rd in the world, have lived up to modest expectations, losing each of their opening three qualifiers. While they put in a surprisingly resolute performance in a narrow 1-0 defeat to England last time out, the lack of threat in front of goal continues to hamper their progress. They have now failed to score in all three WCQ matches so far, and their drought stretches to 11 scoreless outings in their last 12 internationals.

Goalscoring woes aside, Andorra’s commitment can’t be questioned, but the gulf in quality is undeniable as they prepare to face Serbia for the first time in history. The Serbs may not be firing on all cylinders offensively—scoring more than once in only two of their last 12 matches—but against such low-ranked opposition, a breakthrough performance could be on the cards.

Eyes will be on Aleksandar Mitrović as he looks to celebrate his 100th cap in style. Serbia’s all-time leading scorer has a strong record in WCQ fixtures, with three braces in his last five scoring appearances in the competition. Andorra’s Marc Vales is also set to reach the century mark for his country, though the veteran defender hasn’t scored for the national team since 2021 and will instead be tasked with trying to contain Mitrović and company.

Hot Stat: Serbia have only scored more than once in two of their last 12 international matches.

With the pressure on to deliver and a generous fixture on paper, Serbia will aim to find both goals and momentum against an Andorra side that rarely poses a serious threat.
