Atalanta face Bologna in a tricky match

With a chance to secure a spot in the two-legged semi-final against either Juventus or Lecce, Atalanta and Bologna will face off in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia on Tuesday evening in the 2024/25 season. After losing in the final of the tournament for the third time in six seasons last May, Gian Piero Gasperini is leading his team down a familiar path, still hoping to replicate their only success in the tournament back in 1962/63.

The last time these two teams met in this competition was during the 2001/02 season, when La Dea advanced from the round of 16 thanks to the away goals rule. Securing victories has proven to be challenging for the hosts, as they have struggled to cross the finish line with only two wins in their last nine matches (D5, L2), after a strong start with 15 wins out of 17 games across all competitions from October to Christmas.

Atalanta

Bologna is a team that has often shared the spoils in the 2025 season (W3, D4). However, they remain unbeaten since the beginning of the year and have only suffered one loss in all competitions since the end of November (W7, D6). Furthermore, their recent away record against Bergamo is excellent, having won on their last two visits. This is a vast improvement compared to their previous 11-match winless streak in away matches (D3, L8).

Atalanta

Since Bologna’s last defeat to Atalanta, there have been four meetings between the two teams. If Vincenzo Italiano’s side can secure a fifth consecutive victory, fans of the Red and Blues can dare to dream of winning the Coppa Italia once again. Bologna achieved this feat in their first two finals in 1970 and 1974 but haven’t made it that far since!

Players to keep an eye on: Mateo Retegui experienced a sluggish December, only providing one assist in the Coppa Italia. However, in 2025, he has already found the back of the net five times, with three of those goals scored at home. Another noteworthy player is Charalampos Lykogiannis, who has made a strong start to the year, contributing three assists from six games. It’s worth noting that he has also received a booking in his last two appearances.

Notable statistic: Atalanta’s last nine home games in the Coppa Italia have seen four or more goals being scored in eight of those matches.
