During the air pistol mixed team competition on Tuesday, Yusuf Dikeç from Turkey displayed remarkable nonchalance, setting himself apart from his opponents who relied on specialized equipment such as custom glasses, ear protection, and tinted lenses. Despite this, Dikeç, with his everyday glasses and one hand casually in his pocket, achieved Turkey’s first-ever Olympic shooting medal alongside his teammate Sevval Ilayda Tarhan. This effortless performance quickly gained viral attention.
“I use both of my eyes when shooting, unlike most shooters who only use one. That’s why I didn’t feel the need for all that equipment. Shooting with two eyes is something I believe is superior. I’ve conducted extensive research on this topic, so I didn’t require the additional gear,” Dikeç stated during an interview with Turkish radio station Radyo Gol.
Dikeç further explained that shooting with his hand in his pocket has no connection to artistry. He finds himself more motivated and at ease while adopting this stance. According to him, it’s actually about achieving balance in the body and focusing and concentrating better.
The images of the laid-back 51-year-old quickly gained popularity, partly due to the striking contrast with photos of Olympic shooting sensation Kim Ye-ji. Kim’s stylish cap, futuristic glasses, and composed demeanor could easily grace a fashion runway inspired by street style.
Kim secured the silver medal in the 10-meter air pistol event on Sunday, with her 19-year-old teammate Oh Ye Jin clinching the gold.
