The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place this evening at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, where the world’s leading footballers will be recognised. Awards will be presented to the best men’s and women’s players of the 2024/25 season. In a change from previous years, performances at the start of the current campaign will not count towards the vote.
In the men’s contest, Paris Saint-Germain’s long-awaited Champions League triumph, coupled with another Ligue 1 title, has strengthened the case for Ousmane Dembele. The French forward is among the favourites, but he faces fierce competition from Barcelona’s rising talent Lamine Yamal, his teammate Raphinha, and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah. Salah’s record-breaking year played a decisive role in securing another Premier League crown for Jürgen Klopp’s side, ensuring his place in the conversation.
The women’s award is shaping up to be just as competitive. England’s victory at Euro 2025 has placed several Lionesses in contention, while Arsenal’s Champions League final win over Barcelona could enhance the prospects of Alessia Russo or Leah Williamson. Spain remain strong contenders too, with Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putellas and Mariona Caldentey all nominated and looking to add further silverware to their glittering careers.
