The Royal Malta Yacht Club has completed another edition of the Dock Shop Marzamemi Weekend, a popular offshore race between Malta and the Sicilian port of Marzamemi.
A mixed fleet of IRC and Club Class boats took part, with several new entries joining the Club Class for the first time.
The race to Sicily was helped by stronger winds than expected, making for competitive sailing. Conditions became more tactical near Capo Passero, where boats fought for position before the finish.
In the IRC class, Ton Ton La Ferla, Kixx Me, and Jubatus were the first to finish and kept those positions on corrected time. In the Club Class, Forever 25 led home Battleaxe and Game Changer, with the same order reflected on the final results.
Between races, sailors enjoyed a rest day in Marzamemi. The local yacht club hosted the visiting crews, and the clubhouse was full, showing the social side of the event is just as important as the racing.
The return journey to Malta was much more difficult. Light winds and a calm patch in the middle of the race made progress slow and difficult. Most Club Class boats retired due to the conditions.
In the IRC fleet, only Jubatus and Kixx Me finished the race. Jubatus, sailing with a small crew but strong performance, took line honours and won the overall trophy for the weekend.
Sailors praised both the racing and the social side of the event, with comments highlighting the challenging conditions on the water and the excellent hospitality ashore.
The Royal Malta Yacht Club thanked Dock Shop for its support, along with the race management team in Malta and Sicily.
The next event on the club’s calendar is the North Sails Twilight Series, which begins on 17 June.
