Three years ago in a rush to publish Yazmin Zammit Stevens’ result in weightlifting two online Maltese newspapers had made the headlines themselves at they committed the gaffe of the century in sports reporting.
They had published prominently articles stating that the first Maltese Olympian Weightlifter had won a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, when it was not the fact. Yazmin Zammit Stevens had actually placed third out of four participants in a non final event in her category. The games had been postponed by a year and were held in 2021.
Yazmin Zammit Stevens had placed third out of four in the 64kg women category just above Tunisia’s Chaima Rahmouni.
In the snatch, she succeeded in one of the the three attempts, successfully lifting 84kg.
As for the clean and jerk, Zammit Stevens successfully lifted 105kg.
The respective media has apologized for the mishap and amended their articles after the issue was brought up to their attention by those who follow sports and in particular by those who follow the Olympics.
