The Malta Triathlon Federation is celebrating a historic achievement after elite triathlete Kai Azzopardi secured the first-ever medal for a Maltese athlete at a World Triathlon Regional Development Cup.
Azzopardi produced the performance of his career at the 2026 edition of the competition, held at Vlasina Lake in Serbia, earning a remarkable bronze medal against a strong field of emerging elite athletes from across Europe.

The Maltese athlete completed the sprint-distance race in 56:38, maintaining a high level throughout the swim, bike and run segments before securing his place on the podium.
The result represents a major milestone for Maltese triathlon and highlights the continued progress of the Malta Triathlon Federation’s High-Performance Programme. Azzopardi’s success was built on months of dedicated preparation, tactical awareness and consistent improvement on the international circuit.
His podium finish also strengthens his position in the World Triathlon Rankings, rewarding his growing reputation as one of Malta’s leading endurance athletes.
Alongside Azzopardi, fellow Maltese elite competitor Ryan Muscat also delivered a positive performance in a highly competitive field. Muscat finished in 24th place with a time of 1:01:05, gaining further valuable experience against some of Europe’s top developing triathletes.
The performances of both athletes underline the steady rise of elite triathlon in Malta and demonstrate the impact of the federation’s long-term athlete development strategy. Competing regularly at international level has become a key part of preparing Maltese athletes for the demands of elite competition.
The Malta Triathlon Federation praised Azzopardi and Muscat for their commitment, professionalism and dedication in representing the country on the international stage. The federation also expressed its gratitude to the coaching team, support staff, SportMalta, the Maltese Olympic Committee, sponsors and everyone involved in supporting the growth of the sport.

Azzopardi’s bronze medal will be remembered as one of the most significant achievements in Maltese triathlon history. As the country’s first medal at a World Triathlon Regional Development Cup, it marks a new chapter for the sport and provides inspiration for future generations of Maltese athletes aiming to compete at the highest level.
