Jannik Sinner continued his extraordinary domination of world tennis by winning the Internazionali BNL d’Italia title in Rome after defeating Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 in the final. In doing so, the world number one became the first Italian to conquer the tournament since Adriano Panatta fifty years ago, adding yet another historic chapter to his already remarkable career.
Played in front of a packed and emotional Foro Italico crowd, the final lasted one hour and 45 minutes and saw Sinner once again demonstrate the mentality and composure that have turned him into the dominant force of modern tennis. The match itself did not begin in ideal fashion for the Italian star. The Italian secured another early break at the beginning of the second set and from that point controlled proceedings with maturity and confidence, limiting the Norwegian’s opportunities while continuing to dictate the tempo of the rallies.
Ruud attempted to remain in contention and finally created his first break point chance of the second set while trailing 4-3. Yet once again Sinner delivered under pressure, saving the danger with the calmness expected from the world number one. Moments later, the Italian closed the match on his own serve, sealing another 6-4 set and triggering huge celebrations inside the Foro Italico.
This victory carries enormous significance not only for Sinner personally but also for Italian tennis as a whole. Half a century after Panatta’s triumph in Rome, another Italian champion finally lifts the trophy in the capital and does so as the undisputed number one player in the world.
At only 24 years of age, Sinner continues to build a legacy that is rapidly placing him among the greatest players of his generation and potentially among the all time greats of the sport. Rome once again witnessed history, and Italian tennis now has a new king firmly established at the summit of the game.
