World number one Aryna Sabalenka won the Madrid Open for the third time after beating Coco Gauff 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in Saturday’s final.
Sabalenka started strong, dominating the first set against Gauff, who is currently ranked fourth in the world. In the second set, Gauff fought back and even led 3-1 at one point, but Sabalenka held her nerve and came through a tense tie-break to win the match. Gauff finished the final with a double fault, handing Sabalenka the victory.
This win marks Sabalenka’s third title in Madrid, matching Petra Kvitova’s record. It’s also her 31st win on Madrid clay, the most on tour, and adds to her successful season which already includes titles in Brisbane and Miami. She’s now reached six finals this year and 37 overall in her career.

Sabalenka after the match:
“I’m sure we’ll play many more finals against each other, though I hope I win them all!”
She also thanked the crowd, saying she loves playing in Madrid and was very happy to win again.
Gauff, who won the US Open in 2023, had her chances in the second set but couldn’t hold on. Despite the loss, she remained positive:
“I think this is a step in the right direction. This is one of my favourite tournaments and I’m grateful to be here.”
