Injury-hit Australian Nick Kyrgios said he was “feeling good” after winning his first tour match since March 2025 at the Stuttgart Open on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old put in a strong display on grass to beat Frenchman Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Wimbledon warm-up tournament.
“I’ve had a wrist reconstruction and four knee surgeries, so it’s been a real struggle, but I’ve put in a lot of hard work and I’m feeling good about myself,” he said after the match.
“There were so many moments when I thought, ‘Why am I still playing?’ But then I look at the fans and that’s my answer. I’ll carry on a bit longer.
“I’m pleased with how I played today and how my body feels. I’m just really happy to be back.”
Kyrgios reached the Wimbledon final in 2022 but has since been held back by a string of injuries. He played just one singles match in 2023, missed the whole of 2024, managed five matches in 2025, and had only played once this year before Tuesday’s match.
Now without a world ranking, Kyrgios will face Japanese qualifier Sho Shimabukuro in the second round on Thursday. A good result there could put him in contention for a Wimbledon wild card, which are set to be announced next week.
“I’m so thrilled to be back and playing at a high level again,” he added. “Confident? I’m not quite there yet. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow.”
