Monfils warms up for final French Open with star-studded farewell party

Gaël Monfils gave fans at French Open a memorable farewell celebration on Thursday, teaming up with his wife Elina Svitolina to win a fun-filled exhibition event ahead of what is expected to be his final appearance at his home Grand Slam.

The charismatic French star headlined “Gael & Friends” on Court Philippe-Chatrier, an evening combining tennis, music and emotional tributes to mark his remarkable 20-year career on the professional circuit.

A host of top names joined the occasion, including Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Also taking part were four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka, Maria Sakkari and young American prospect Iva Jovic. Former Davis Cup teammates Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet added a sentimental feel to the night.

Monfils and Svitolina eventually emerged victorious in the exhibition, entertaining the Paris crowd with trick shots, jokes and light-hearted rallies in place of the usual competitive pressure.

Over the course of his career, Monfils claimed 13 ATP titles and produced several memorable performances in Paris, including reaching the semi-finals in 2008. He also helped France reach the Davis Cup finals in 2010 and 2014.

Although he never captured a Grand Slam title, Monfils became one of the sport’s most beloved entertainers thanks to his flair, athleticism and infectious personality on court.

“Thank you for everything you’ve given me over the years,” the 39-year-old told the crowd afterwards.

“It’s been the dream of a lifetime. I always gave everything I had. I may not have won a Grand Slam, but I gained something just as meaningful — a career in tennis that makes me proud.”

Earlier in the evening, Svitolina had described her husband as “a magician” in a message written to their daughter. She was visibly emotional by the end of the event as Monfils stayed on court to absorb one final standing ovation from the home fans.

Monfils is set to face fellow Frenchman Hugo Gaston in the opening round at Roland Garros next week, marking his 19th main-draw appearance at the tournament.
