Lorenzo Musetti has withdrawn from the French Open after suffering a thigh injury, dealing a major blow to the Italian’s hopes of building on last year’s impressive run at Roland Garros.
The world number 10 confirmed on Wednesday that medical examinations carried out following his defeat at the Italian Open revealed a rectus femoris injury that will require several weeks of rest and recovery.

Musetti had visibly struggled physically during his round of 16 loss against Casper Ruud in Rome on Tuesday, raising immediate concerns over his fitness ahead of the clay court Grand Slam.

In a statement posted on Instagram, the 24-year-old admitted the decision was extremely difficult.
“After yesterday’s match, I underwent medical examinations which revealed a rectus femoris injury, requiring several weeks of rest and recovery,” Musetti said.
“Unfortunately, this means I won’t be able to compete in Hamburg and Roland Garros, news that is incredibly hard to take.”
The Italian also thanked supporters in Rome for their backing despite not being fully fit throughout the tournament.
“A huge thank you to the Rome crowd for your incredible support. That’s exactly why, despite not being 100%, I chose to step on court and give everything I had in my home tournament.”
Musetti had been expected to mount a serious challenge at this year’s French Open following consistent progress at the Grand Slam level in recent seasons. He reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros in 2025 and climbed to a career-high ranking of world number five earlier this year.
His recent performances on the biggest stages have underlined his growing status within the men’s game, having also reached the Australian Open quarter-finals this season, the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2024 and the US Open quarter-finals in 2025.
His withdrawal further weakens the French Open field, with several high-profile players already ruled out through injury. Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn due to a wrist problem, while Holger Rune and Jack Draper are also set to miss the tournament.
The main draw at the French Open begins on May 24, with the absence of several leading contenders now set to reshape the tournament landscape considerably.
