Alexander Zverev moved into the third round of the French Open with a convincing straight-sets win over a struggling Tomas Machac on Wednesday night, winning 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 on Court Philippe Chatrier.
The German second seed, who is chasing his first ever Grand Slam title, will next face Frenchman Quentin Halys on Friday.
Machac was clearly not himself during the match, taking a lengthy medical timeout in the second set due to a problem with his left foot, which visibly affected his movement throughout.
Zverev was full of praise for his opponent’s early display but acknowledged the injury disrupted the flow of the match. He was nonetheless pleased to wrap things up in three sets, having faced just one break point across the entire match.

The world number three has a strong record at Roland Garros, reaching at least the quarter-finals in each of the last five years. He came closest to winning the title in 2024, when he lost a five-set final to Carlos Alcaraz.
