FEDERER CLOSER TO RETIREMENT: I don't know when I will be ready...

We haven’t seen Roger Federer on the tennis courts for some time, and as things stand – the Swiss is getting closer to retirement.

Federer addressed the public with an emotional letter, in which he explained how he feels, whether he plans to play and how he is recovering from severe injuries.

  • I wanted to conduct the details of the interrogation before I gave an official statement and the examinations were encouraging. I started a long period of rehabilitation in which I invested my soul and body. The situation is not like in 2016, so I have to be patient. I will be able to start running lightly in January and then continue training on the field with complex support in March or April. Therefore, I estimate that I could return to competitions in the summer of 2022 – Federer said.

Of course, this news worried his fans, but he points out that we will not be watching him soon.

  • I would be very surprised to be ready to play at Wimbledon. This summer, we decided to completely heal the meniscus injury, which required more time to recover. From there, the doctors used the opportunity to treat my cartilage. The combination of these two interventions requires patience and caution.

He also explained why he decided on a complicated operation.

  • I did this operation so that I could ski with the children again or play football or tennis in the future. My primary motivation was to return to a normal lifestyle. However, I wanted to approach this rehabilitation with the mentality and body of a top athlete.

However, I still have the desire to compete and play tennis.

  • My ambition is to see what I am capable of at least once again as a professional. I fight for it and I am very motivated. I feel the support of the team and the family. I also want to say goodbye in my own way and on the tennis court. So I gave my all in the recovery process. I have had similar challenges many times in my career. Sometimes the public was not aware of that. Although I know the end is near, I want to try to play big matches – says Federer and adds:
  • I know it won’t be easy, but I’ll try. To be clear, my life will not collapse if I do not play in the Grand Slam final again. Still, it would be the most beautiful dream if it happened again. In fact, I still believe in it. I believe in that kind of miracle.

He sent a message to both his fans and tennis fans.

  • How will people remember me? After the last set at Wimbledon in July? Or my Grand Slam trophies and what excited them as they watched me play? I’d bet on the latter. I’ve been pretty relaxed about it for a few years now. Still, I understand their feelings. It would be easy for me to say, I gave a lot and I got a lot – says Federer and adds:
  • Let’s stop here. Still, investing everything in returns is also my way of thanking them. My fans deserve more than my last appearance on the grass – concluded the Swiss tennis player.
