Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner and 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic have withdrawn from next month’s Canadian Open in Montreal, tournament organisers have confirmed.
The ATP Masters 1000 event, which takes place from 1 to 13 August, is an important warm-up tournament ahead of the US Open.
Sinner’s withdrawal means world number two Alexander Zverev and home favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime are now expected to be the top two seeds. Carlos Alcaraz had already pulled out of the tournament because of a wrist injury.
In a statement, Sinner explained that he and his team decided to withdraw to focus on his health.
He said: “After carefully considering everything with my team, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw from Montreal. It is never easy to miss such an important event, but we believe this is the right decision to prioritise my health. I’m disappointed not to be there, but I hope to return to Montreal in the future.”
The 24-year-old Italian successfully defended his Wimbledon title earlier this month, beating Alexander Zverev in four sets to win his fifth Grand Slam title.
Djokovic, meanwhile, reached the Wimbledon semi-finals before losing to Sinner in straight sets.
