August Holmgren misses French Open main draw after final qualifying loss

August Holmgren has missed out on direct entry to the French Open main draw after losing in the final round of qualifying to Facundo Díaz Acosta.

The match finished 7-6, 4-6, 2-6 in favour of the Argentine, ending Holmgren’s bid to reach the main draw of the Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

Holmgren, ranked 150 in the world, competed closely with Díaz Acosta over a match lasting around two hours and 30 minutes, with the opening set decided in a tie break.

The Danish player started strongly, breaking early before both players held serve through to 6-6. He then dominated the tie break to take the first set.

Momentum initially stayed with Holmgren at the start of the second set, but Díaz Acosta recovered to gain control of the rallies and level the match with a 6-4 set win.

In the deciding set, Holmgren remained competitive until 2-2 before the Argentine broke twice to close out the match.

The result leaves Holmgren awaiting a possible entry as a lucky loser, depending on withdrawals before the start of the tournament.

Clara Tauson remains the only Danish player confirmed in the French Open draw at this stage.

Holmgren has previously competed once in a Grand Slam main draw, reaching the third round at Wimbledon last year.
