Big changes at Wimbledon

The organizers of the biggest tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon, have decided that starting this year, men’s doubles matches will be played in two sets, and not in the three won sets as before.

Wimbledon was the last Grand Slam tournament where men’s doubles matches were played to three sets, which was criticized by many singles players because that format deterred them from competing in doubles.

The organizers announced that the decision to shorten the matches was made after “wide consultations” and that with this decision Wimbledon was aligned with other Grand Slam tournaments.

“Also, this will make it easier to schedule matches, and will encourage more players to sign up for doubles,” the organizers said.

Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell won the men’s doubles title at last year’s Wimbledon. This Australian double defeated the Croatian players Nikola Mektic and Mateo Pavic in the final by 3:2 (7:6 6:7 4:6 6:4 7:6), and the match lasted four hours and 11 minutes.
