Former champion Alexander Zverev bounced back from a dreadful start to overcome Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 1-6 7-6(4) 6-2 on Friday, securing a spot in the Italian Open final.
The German third seed, who clinched the title in 2017 and was a finalist the following year, appeared to be in serious trouble as the 29th seed Tabilo swiftly captured the opening set.
The 26-year-old, having defeated world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round, was participating in his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final. Despite this, he remained composed and broke Zverev twice in the initial set.
