MTTA president removed after vote of no confidence amid ongoing internal crisis

The President of the Malta Table Tennis Association (MTTA), John Sciberras, has been removed from office following an overwhelming vote of no confidence during an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM).

The motion, brought forward by members dissatisfied with the association’s leadership over the past year and four months, also included Vice-President Kevin Cutajar. Of the 93 members present, 89 voted in favour of the motion, two voted against, and two abstained, a 95.7% vote in support of the officials’ removal.

As a result, both Sciberras and Cutajar have been relieved of their duties. The remaining members of the MTTA Executive Committee have assumed responsibility in a caretaker capacity and will oversee operations until a new president and vice-president are elected. The nomination process is expected to begin in the coming days.

MaltaSport has an internal email sent by the Office of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations (OCVO), which was also circulated among MTTA members. In the email, Legal Services Director Dr John Seychell Navarro explicitly warned against proceeding with the EGM while “current issues” were still being examined. The OCVO confirmed it was coordinating with other regulators and urged the association to refrain from what it called “draconian measures.”

Despite that warning, the EGM went ahead. The same communication reaffirmed that the OCVO only recognised the existing committee and planned to meet with them to discuss the best path forward. The email also underscored that the Commissioner was dedicating significant attention to the internal crisis facing the MTTA.

MaltaSport has also learned that the Commissioner is investigating an alleged criminal case involving a former member of the MTTA Executive Committee. The probe forms part of a wider compliance and governance review surrounding the association.

In the aftermath of the vote, the MTTA released a statement thanking members for participating in what it called an “important democratic process” and reiterated its commitment to working transparently with local and international bodies including SportMalta, the Malta Olympic Committee, AIMS, the European Table Tennis Union, and the International Table Tennis Federation.

With the association now under caretaker leadership and the eyes of both regulators and the sporting community firmly fixed on its next steps, the MTTA faces a critical period of transition and accountability.
