Charles Aquilina of Bormla SC was in a class of his own again on Saturday, winning the Veteran Category at the Caen Grand Prix in France. In the final, he beat Belgian Daniel Scheen 3-0. In the semi-final, he defeated Dubois from France. The competition saw 16 players from France, Belgium, the UK, Tunisia, and Malta, and Aquilina claimed his second gold of the 2024-2025 season.
In the Open competition, with 48 players taking part, Bessim Golger reached the semi-finals but lost to Theo Modeste in extra time, earning a bronze medal.
On Sunday, in the team event, Bormla Subbuteo claimed top honours among 15 teams in Group 1. The world number 1 ranked team from Bormla won 4-0 against Issy-les-Moulineaux (France), 4-0 against Caen (Belgium), and 2-1 against Hennuyer (Belgium) to reach the quarter-finals. They then won 4-0 against Wamme (Belgium) and 4-0 against Hennuyer B (Belgium) in the semi-finals. In the final, Bormla triumphed 3-1 over Issy-les-Moulineaux (France), securing a special double weekend with two golds.
The Bormla SC team was made up of Captain Charles Aquilina, George Ebejer, Belgian players William Van Den Houte and Bessim Golger, and Austrian Christian Haas.
