Last night, the Maltese Aquatic Sports Association (ASA) hosted its annual awards ceremony to honour the outstanding achievements of 2024.
San Giljan’s Jake Bonavia was named BOV Water Polo Player of the Year, a remarkable achievement for the young athlete who has already established himself as a key figure in his team. Despite his youth, Bonavia has played an instrumental role in securing several major trophies for his boyhood club and is also an integral part of the Maltese national team.
In the women’s category, Eyla Schembri of Sliema claimed the Player of the Year award. Known for her talent and consistency, Schembri has been a cornerstone of Sliema’s success for many years and continues to represent Malta at the international level with distinction.
During the awards ceremony, ASA President Karl Izzo highlighted the significant progress made by the association in recent years. He reflected on Malta’s memorable performances in the World Cup Second Division and the European Championships, attributing the nation’s rising standard to continued investment by both clubs and the ASA itself.
Izzo praised the dedication and hard work of the athletes, coaches, and clubs that have contributed to the growth of the sport, reinforcing Malta’s standing in international water polo.
The evening celebrated not only individual excellence but also the collective efforts that have propelled Maltese aquatic sports to new heights.
