Rising Italian Alpine skier Matilde Lorenzi, 19, dies in training crash

Young Italian Alpine skier Matilde Lorenzi has tragically passed away at the age of 19 following a serious training accident, as reported by the Italian Ministry of Defence.

Lorenzi, a member of the Italian Army’s sports section, succumbed to her injuries on the morning of October 29. Hailing from Villarbasse, she was part of the junior women’s team and had competed in the FIS Europa Cup circuit. The accident occurred while she was training on the Gravald G1 piste in Val Senales, South Tyrol, where she fell.

Immediate medical assistance was provided, and she was airlifted to a hospital in Bolzano, where she sadly lost her battle for life.

Matilde was the younger sister of Lucrezia Lorenzi, a skier who has competed in the World Cup slalom series. Raised in Sestrière, Matilde participated in last year’s Junior World Alpine Ski Championships, finishing sixth in downhill and eighth in super-G. She was also the Italian junior champion last season in both the overall standings and super-G. Her best result on the FIS Europa Cup circuit was an 11th place finish in super-G at St Moritz in December 2023.

Both the Italian Winter Sports Federation and the International Ski and Snowboard Federation have conveyed their condolences following her untimely death.
