Italian skier Matteo Franzoso has died after a fall during training in Chile over the weekend, the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) confirmed on Monday.
The 25-year-old, who specialised in downhill events, had an accident on the La Parva slope on Saturday. He was airlifted to a hospital in Santiago and placed in a medically induced coma, but sadly passed away.
FISI President Flavio Roda said, “It’s a tragedy for both his family and the sport. This brings back painful memories of when Matilde Lorenzi died less than a year ago. We must do everything we can to stop these kinds of accidents from happening again.”
Franzoso’s best result came in 2023 when he finished 28th in the World Cup super-G race in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
