Big news has hit Italy’s Serie B as Brescia are expected to receive a 4-point deduction for financial irregularities, which would push them down to third from bottom and result in relegation to Serie C alongside Cittadella and Cosenza. This change would save Frosinone, while Salernitana and Sampdoria would move into the playoff spots. As a result, the playoff match originally planned between Salernitana and Frosinone has been cancelled, and a new tie between Sampdoria and Salernitana will be scheduled once the penalty is confirmed.
The issue started when Brescia reportedly used non-existent tax credits to cover part of their wage and tax payments back in February. The Italian football finance body (Covisoc) flagged the matter, and the tax office confirmed the error only recently, on 16 May. This led to quick action from the football authorities, who are now moving fast to make a final decision.
A hearing is expected in the coming days. If the punishment is confirmed, the new playoff match will go ahead without waiting for appeals. If there’s room for appeal, everything may be delayed. There’s also a chance Brescia made similar errors in April – if confirmed, further penalties could apply next season.
In short, Serie B’s season finale has taken an unexpected turn, and the final standings are now likely to change. Football fans across Italy can expect a tense summer ahead.
