Gozo is set to host the landmark 50th edition of its celebrated annual half marathon on Sunday, April 27, 2025. First launched in 1977 by a group of young volunteers from the Xagħra Youth Centre, the Gozo Half Marathon – Il-Ġirja t’Għawdex – has grown into the island’s largest and longest-running athletic event, welcoming participants from across Malta and around the world.
Now a staple of the local sporting calendar, the Gozo Half Marathon attracts athletes of all ages and abilities, turning Gozo into a vibrant hub of fitness and community celebration. The event offers a range of competitive and recreational races, including a 21km half marathon, 10km and 5km runs, as well as walkathons, a 2km family fun run, and children’s races over distances of 2km and 900m.
Over the decades, the event has remained true to its founding spirit – organised entirely by volunteers committed to promoting healthy living and showcasing Gozo’s natural and cultural beauty. Organisers have continued to improve the experience, with the half marathon and 10km routes now officially certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). Athletics Malta has also awarded the event a ‘Gold Label’ status, ensuring high-quality standards for runners and spectators alike.
This year’s routes have been carefully designed to highlight some of Gozo’s most iconic landmarks. Runners will pass through the historic streets of Victoria, beneath the imposing Citadel, and enjoy panoramic views from Tas-Salvatur Hill, home to the Christ the Redeemer statue. The scenic route continues through Xagħra’s village square, along the picturesque coastlines of Xwejni and Qbajjar, past the island’s traditional salt pans, and by the revered Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary – offering an unforgettable blend of challenge and charm.
The success of the Gozo Half Marathon is made possible through the support of key sponsors. These include TeamSport, Diadora, GasanMamo Insurance, Bay Radio, Xagħra Local Council, Visit Malta, San Michel, Gatorade, Kind’s Auto Sales, and the Ministry for Gozo. Their contributions, combined with the tireless work of volunteers, ensure the event remains a beacon of community pride and sporting excellence.
As Gozo prepares to celebrate this milestone edition, anticipation is running high for what promises to be a memorable day of sport, unity, and tradition.
