Malta Wrestling Federation in Tirana, Albania

Last weekend, the Maltese Wrestling Federation took part in an International Tournament in Tirana, Albania organized by the International Wrestling Federation (UWW). Several countries took part including Italy, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Romania, Australia, Albania and others.

It is worth saying that Albania, Australia and Kazakhstan took part with wrestlers who will take part in the olympics in Paris next August and used this competition as preparation.

Gary Giordmaina won a bronze medal in the 57kg when after losing against wrestlers from Kazakhstan, Abzal and Dias, he defeated the Italian Carmine Caiazza by points, where Gary also started from the bottom but made a convincing comeback to emerge victorious. This was the second time in this tournament where Gary managed to win a medal. Gary was presented with the Bronze medal by the President of the Maltese Wrestling Federation, Pierre Cassar.

In the 74kg category, Nico Zarb had fights against, Chermen Aliev (will represent Albania in the Olympics) Luca Finizio – Italy, Assetov Dhozan – Kazakhstan and Vasile Diacon – Moldova. Although he did not win, he had good fights where, especially against the Italian, he was close to winning. The two wrestlers were assisted by National coach Jesmond Giordemaina. As a team, Malta finished seventh out of 11 countries. This participation would not have been possible without the help from the Maltese Olympic Committee and SportMalta.

Part of the Maltese team was also composed by President Pierre Cassar where he had important meetings with the Italian and Albanian representatives with the intention of the Maltese team having training abroad.

The international Refreree Abraham Vassallo was in charge of one of the two mats where he also refereed several finals, including that of the 57kg European Champion, the Albanian Abakarov. The next Event for the Maltese team will be in mid-June, Citta di Sassari, in Sardinia, Italy.
