Malta competed for the first time in the Olympics in the 1928 Summer edition in Amsterdam. Malta’s debut in the Olympic Games coincides exactly with the date of the foundation of the Maltese Olympic Committee.
Unfortunately till today Malta is still to win a medal at the Olympics.
Malta’s debut in the Olympics in 1928 was with the men’s Water polo team who had won against Luxembourg 3-1, before losing to France in the second round.
Malta participated rather sporadically since then, missing the Olympic Games of 1932, 1952, 1956, 1964, and 1976.
Remarkable results were registered in the 1984 Los Angeles edition when sailor Peter Bonello finished ninth in the windsurfing event.
Other top ten placings were registered by Malta’s top elite Shooter William Chetcuti who finished eighth in double trap shooting event in the 2008 Olympics and also finished ninth in this event in both the 2004 and 2012 editions of the Olympics.
Malta’s hope for a historic medal still remains a dream for now !
