Lamont Marcell Jacobs to carry Italian flag as well at Paris Games

Lamont Marcell Jacobs will join the Italian athletes following flag bearers Arianna Errigo and Gianmarco Tamberi during the opening ceremony of the Paris Games. However, he aspires that a successful defence of his 100m title might earn him the honour in four years’ time.

Jacobs, who made history as the first Italian man to win the 100m in Tokyo and also secured gold in the 4x100m relay, is scheduled to participate in the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet in Ostrava on Tuesday, followed by the Oslo Diamond League two days later.

Having clocked a season’s best of 10.07 seconds to clinch the 100m at the Roma Sprint Festival earlier this month, Jacobs expressed to Italian daily La Stampa his desire to have been the flag bearer in Paris. “I would have been super happy; there was a lot of competition and Gimbo (Tamberi) is the captain of athletics, he has won everything, he is a motivator and he will certainly know how to play the role,” he said.

“I will need to win again in Paris to be considered for Los Angeles 2028.” The 29-year-old has faced a series of injuries since his victory in Tokyo in 2021.
