Team Malta had another busy day at the Mediterranean Games on Sunday, with athletes competing in tennis, athletics and sailing in Taranto.
The day included a strong performance in the tennis doubles, a season-best in the long jump and some difficult moments on the water.
Tennis
Alex Degabriele and Liam Delicata narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the Men’s Doubles after losing 2-1 to Cyprus’ Melios Efstathiou and Eleftherios Neos.
The Maltese pair started strongly and won the first set 6-3. Cyprus responded by taking the second set by the same score to level the match.
The bronze medal was decided by a match tiebreak, with the Cypriots winning 10-6.
Athletics
Jeremy Zammit produced a season-best performance in the long jump, recording a distance of 7.61m.
Claire Azzopardi and Graham Pellegrini competed in the 100m heats, finishing their races in 12.40 and 11.05 respectively. Both will be back in action on Tuesday 1 September in the 200m heats.
Jared Micallef finished sixth in his 800m heat in a time of 1:48.06.

Sailing
It was a difficult day on the water for Malta’s sailors, with mistakes proving costly and resulting in penalties for both competitors.
The racing was extremely close, with very little separating the athletes across the fleet.
The sailing competition continues on Monday 31 August, with the seventh and eighth races scheduled in both the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 classes.
Monday will also see more Team Malta athletes in action. Mark Schembri will compete in the Men’s Single Sculls heats, while Matthew Galea Soler will take part in the 400m heats.
