Young Maltese and Belgian drivers to meet in international trotting challenge

The Malta Racing Club will host an exciting international youth trotting event this Friday, as four promising Belgian drivers take on four of Malta’s rising talents in a unique sporting exchange aimed at developing the next generation of the sport.

The initiative, organised by the Malta Racing Club with the full financial support of EquestriMalta, is designed to give young drivers valuable international racing experience while encouraging friendship, learning and sporting development from an early age.

The two special races will take place at the Malta Equidrome during Friday’s race meeting, with the first scheduled for 6:00pm and the second at 7:40pm.

Belgium will be represented by Gilles Verboomen, Julie Onghena, Milan Van Ghelewe and Eline De Koninck, who will compete against four young Maltese drivers from the Malta Racing Club Academy: Matthias Bezzina, Zaliyah Cutajar, Chloe Vassallo and Daleyzia Zammit.

The international exchange will continue later this summer, when four Maltese drivers will travel to Belgium to compete at Mons Racetrack, giving them the opportunity to race in a different environment and test themselves against young international competitors.

The programme forms part of the Malta Racing Club’s long-term strategy, together with EquestriMalta, to invest in youth development and strengthen the future of trotting by providing aspiring drivers with opportunities to compete beyond Malta’s shores.

By participating in international exchanges at an early stage of their careers, young drivers gain valuable experience, build confidence, learn from different racing cultures and establish lasting relationships with fellow competitors from across Europe.

EquestriMalta, the national authority responsible for promoting and regulating equine sport in Malta, has fully funded the initiative, reaffirming its commitment to creating international opportunities that support the personal and sporting development of young athletes.

Both the Malta Racing Club and EquestriMalta believe that initiatives of this kind play an important role in strengthening the sport locally while enhancing Malta’s presence within the wider European trotting community.

The Malta Racing Club is now looking forward to welcoming the Belgian delegation for what promises to be an exciting evening of international youth racing at the Malta Equidrome.
