Daniel Tabone reflects on his time as Malta Handball Association President

Outgoing Malta Handball Association President Daniel Tabone has looked back on his time in office, highlighting the progress made in administration, coach education, women’s handball, beach handball and youth development.

During his presidency, the Association updated its statute and legal framework while also restructuring local competitions. Coach education was also a major focus, with four European Handball Federation (EHF) expert coaches visiting Malta, including three during the past six months, to work with local coaches.

The Women’s National Team also returned to EHF competition for the first time in more than 10 years, marking an important step forward for women’s handball in Malta.

The Association worked closely with the Government of Malta and Sport Malta to secure funding for technical development and improve facilities for clubs and national teams.

Beach handball also enjoyed a successful period. The Men’s National Team qualified for the 2025 EHF Beach Handball EURO for the first time in history, while the Women’s Beach Handball National Team was established and produced encouraging performances over the past two summers. The team is now preparing for the Mediterranean Beach Games in 2027.

Tabone also thanked the Maltese Olympic Committee for its increased funding and technical support, which he described as vital to the growth of beach handball.

Another major achievement came in September 2025, when Malta became the smallest European country to sign the EHF Grassroots Charter. The agreement forms part of the Association’s long-term plan to develop young players and has already helped increase participation in Mini Handball.

Reflecting on his presidency, Tabone admitted there were challenges and difficult decisions along the way, but said honesty, patience and working for the good of the sport always remained his priorities.

“I remain convinced that Maltese handball’s future depends on unity, respect and shared responsibility,” he said.

With a new leadership team now taking over, Tabone said he is confident about the future of Maltese handball. Following a full handover to incoming president Vladimiro Commodini and his team, he wished them every success.

Tabone also thanked the members of the Management Board, his family and friends, and the local media for their support throughout his presidency.

“I will always remain a supporter of Maltese handball, and I leave with deep respect for everyone who continues to carry it forward,” he said.
