Tragedy in motorsport as two riders die

The world of motorsport is mourning the loss of two riders, Owen Jenner, 21, and Shane Richardson, 29, who tragically died following a horrific crash during a British Superbikes event at Oulton Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

The accident occurred moments after the start of the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship race, when a chain-reaction crash involving 11 riders unfolded at turn one, Old Hall Corner. The race was immediately red-flagged as emergency services rushed to the scene. Organizers later canceled the remainder of the event due to the severity of the incident.

Devastating Losses Confirmed

In a statement issued by MotorSport Vision Racing (MSVR), it was confirmed that Jenner and Richardson suffered fatal injuries:

  • Owen Jenner, riding for Rapid Honda, suffered a catastrophic head injury. Despite immediate trackside attention and resuscitation efforts at the circuit’s medical center, he was pronounced dead.
  • Shane Richardson, competing for Astro-JJR Hippo Suzuki and a father of two, sustained severe chest injuries and passed away en route to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Fellow rider Tom Tunstall, 47, was also seriously injured and is being treated for significant back and abdominal injuries. Five others were treated for minor injuries, and three more were confirmed unhurt.

Investigations Underway

The Motorcycle Circuit Racing Control Board and MSVR are now investigating the crash in coordination with the Coroner and Cheshire Constabulary.

Tributes Pour In

The racing community has been left stunned. Riders, fans, and teams have taken to social media to express their grief and support:

“A terrible day for our sport. My heart goes out to the families of both Owen Jenner and Shane Richardson… They shall never be forgotten.”
