The INDYCAR season heads to Washington, D.C. this weekend for the Freedom 250, with championship leader Alex Palou potentially able to secure his fourth consecutive title.
Palou arrives in the capital with a 133-point advantage over Kyle Kirkwood, while David Malukas is a further four points behind. To clinch the championship with three races remaining, Palou would need to leave Washington with a lead of at least 162 points.
The 1.7-mile D.C. street circuit will provide a very different challenge from the recently completed Markham race. The track features mainly 90-degree corners and will host a demanding 147-lap, 250-mile race.
“It’s pretty crazy distance for a street course,” said Will Power, who finished third in Markham.
Scott McLaughlin expects the race to be particularly demanding, describing the repeated laps as feeling like being in a “washing machine” because of the bumps and constant turns.
For Palou, however, the focus is firmly on securing another championship.
“I’ll work for it, absolutely,” the Spaniard said when asked about the possibility of clinching the title in Washington.
McLaughlin and Dixon chase important milestones
While Palou leads the championship, two experienced drivers are looking to end unwanted streaks.
Scott McLaughlin has gone 32 races without a victory, his longest winless run since beginning his racing career. The Team Penske driver admits he is eager to return to the top step after coming close on several occasions.
Scott Dixon is also chasing a significant achievement. The six-time champion has won at least one race in every season for the past 21 years and will be hoping to maintain that record before leaving Chip Ganassi Racing at the end of the season for Arrow McLaren.

Elsewhere in American motorsport, Noah Gragson has signed a contract extension with Front Row Motorsports, with options that could keep him in a Cup Series car beyond 2027.
NASCAR has also introduced limits for rookie status, with drivers now allowed a maximum of 12 previous Cup starts, 10 O’Reilly Series starts or eight Truck Series starts while still being eligible as rookies.
Several drivers also secured playoff places at Richmond. Chase Briscoe, Chase Elliott and Christopher Bell qualified for the Cup Series postseason, while Christian Eckes, Gio Ruggiero and Ty Majeski secured places in the Truck Series playoffs.
The next INDYCAR race in Washington will begin a demanding final stretch of the season, with the championship battle continuing through the Milwaukee double-header before the finale at Laguna Seca.
